North vs. South

Seven years ago I visited Fort Fisher for the first time. Confederate flags blew violently in the burly breeze blowing from the northeast off Kure Beach.  There were cannons booming and men dressed as war torn soldiers who pretended to fight under the full wrath of a high August sun.

Having been a recent transplant from the North I wasn’t primed for a surprise Civil War reenactment.  This first impression of the lower expanse of Pleasure Island got me thinking: Had I travelled too far south?

Having just married the woman of my dreams, a Southern woman, at this same meaty fortification of the Confederacy, I can confidently say no.

August 21, 2010 was a much different day in Fort Fisher.  The sun was warm, the breeze was gentle, and there were no explosions or gunshots.  The sun set over the Cape Fear River, just as we planned.  Our families and friends sat under the mangroves, the North on one side and the South on the other.

Fort Fisher’s next Civil War reenactment will be on January 15th, 2011.  The next wedding  will probably be this weekend, and the next, as there are more than a hundred ceremonies per year at North Carolina’s third most visited, and in my opinion the most beautiful, historic site.

As the heat and humidity subside across eastern North Carolina there is no better time to visit Fort Fisher to catch a glimpse of history or even better create your own.
