We love the Farmers Market!

temescalmarketbigOne of the wonderful things about Wilmington, NC is the availability of farmers markets throughout the week featuring local produce and meat from local farmers.

The Downtown Wilmington Farmers Market is probably the most well-known and is a curbside market featuring local farmers, producers, artists and crafters.  Products offered include fresh fruits and berries, vegetables, plants, herbs, flowers, eggs, cheeses, meats, seafood, honey, baked goods, legumes, pickled items, jams and jellies, wine, art, crafts and more.

The market is open Saturdays from 8am to 1pm April through December. This is the market I frequent almost weekly, and some of my favorite farmers and sellers are Black River Organic Farm (lots of variety and the BEST tomatoes and peppers, hands down!), Angela’s Pepper-Pickled Foods (try the mild pickled okra), and Shelton Herb Farm (gorgeous garden plants and lots of variety).

Another farmers market that has become very popular lately is the Poplar Grove Farmers Market in North Wilmington/Ogden. This market features local, all North Carolina grown and handmade products such as local seafood, fresh cut flowers, goat cheese, farm-raised beef and goat meats, fresh vegetables and produce, organic produce and blueberries, landscape and bedding plants, fresh-cut herbs, handmade unique arts and crafts, fresh fruits and berries (subject to availablity), and more.

The market is open Wednesdays from 8am to 1pm and the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month from 3:30pm to 6:30pm April through December.

A new market in the community is the Wrightsville Beach Farmers Market. I’ve not been to the Wrightsville Beach market yet, but I hear that it’s a fabulous little city market. The market is open Mondays from 8am to 1pm during the summer.

If you miss the market one week, a few of our local grocery stores support local farmers as well. Tidal Creek Coop is a lovely organic grocer that features produce from local farmers. They also have a nice cafe and deli that serves up breakfast and lunch. If you stop in, try the Curry Chicken Salad Wrap or the Unchicken Salad. Yum!

Lovey’s Market is another local grocer that stocks produce from area farmers. Stop by their cafe and try the Sunshine Burger.

If you visit a big chain, Harris Teeter has an incredible produce selection with some items from local farmers. Harris Teeter is one of my favorite big chain grocers because they provide a lot of selection and dare to venture outside of the conventional food finds. If you want purple cauliflower, you’ll find it at Harris Teeter.

Now that I’ve shared with you my favorite places to find fresh, local food, tell me yours!
